How to Clean Seatbelts & Remove Stains

Seatbelts are an essential safety feature in any vehicle, but they can easily become dirty and stained over time. Cleaning your seatbelt is a quick and easy task that can keep your car looking and smelling fresh.

Here’s how to deep clean your seatbelt:

  1. Remove the seatbelt: Before cleaning, determine whether you’ll need to remove the seatbelt from the vehicle. In most cases, pulling the seatbelt and working section by section will be sufficient. Only in extreme cases will the seatbelt have to be fully removed. In these instances, follow manufacturer guidelines for safe removal.
  2. Vacuum the seatbelt: In cases where pet hair or abundant lint is present, it’s beneficial to use a vacuum first. Using a handheld vacuum to remove loose debris will also make it easier to see any stains or spots that need to be cleaned.
  3. Spot-clean stains: If you notice any stains on your seatbelt, use a diluted soap such as Magic Cleaner Concentrate or a stain remover such as Hot Shot to spot-clean. These products can be worked in with a specialty seatbelt brush, carpet brush, or terry towel. Be careful not to oversaturate the seatbelt, as excess product can become difficult to remove, and too much water can damage the webbing.
  4. Wipe down the seatbelt: Use a clean, damp cloth to wipe down the entire seatbelt. This final wipe will remove any remaining dirt or grime and cleaning product.
  5. Allow the seatbelt to dry: Once you’ve finished cleaning the seatbelt, hang it in place or lay it flat to dry. Avoid exposing the seatbelt to direct sunlight or heat sources, as this can damage the webbing.

How to steam clean a seatbelt

Similar to other areas of interior detailing, using steam to clean the seatbelt is a great way to achieve the best possible results while introducing fewer chemicals. This also makes it a great method for more sensitive materials.

Hot steam will help to release any stains that have been embedded into the fabric of the seatbelt. A vapor steamer is also less likely to oversaturate the belt, providing a faster dry time and a more uniform clean.

While a steamer may not be required to achieve a sparkling clean seatbelt, it comes with many advantages.

If you don’t own a steamer but want to experience similar benefits, a carpet extractor can aid in seatbelt cleaning as well.

To properly use a carpet extractor, the seatbelt will have to be on a solid surface. This can be achieved either by removing the seatbelt entirely or by laying the seatbelt against the seat or a floor mat.

The steamer will do a better job of not waterlogging the belt and will be easier to use without removing the belt.

It’s important to note that different types of seatbelt fabrics may require different cleaning methods, so it’s always a good idea to check the manufacturer’s instructions or the vehicle owner’s manual before cleaning. Harsh chemicals and abrasives can damage the seatbelt.

Cleaning your seatbelt is an easy and important task that can keep your car looking and smelling fresh. A clean seatbelt can also help you and other passengers feel more comfortable while driving. Regular cleaning ensures that your seatbelt will continue to function properly and provide the protection you need in case of an accident.
